It was really interesting to go into a house in which a man dedicated 7 years of his free time towards making a ridiculously complex and accurate mechanism for showing the position of the heavenly spheres. I also really like clockwork devices, so all of the different ornate pieces for telling anything from time to different data about the solar system.
I agree! It was totally cool to see how seven years of free time can turn into a planetarium that continues to be accurate to this day.

ReplyDeleteI also thought that the clockwork mechanisms were really interesting as well. The fact that he was able to understand all of the information about the behavior of the orbits of the planets and also design a mechanism that accounts for eclipses, leap years, time, etc. was not only intricate but astounding for his work. I also thought that the fact Eise Eisinga had an agreed upon amount of time to complete this work with his wife was quite funny.
I think it is really cool the gears for the planetarium still are working and accurate. I wish the speaker would have given us a little more information.
ReplyDeleteI also really liked the clock and was also surprised to see that it is still in an accurate working condition. I also thought the guy was a genius for adding extra measurements to it like the days of the week, zodiac signs, and the several other attached clocks. It was smart of him to leave behind directions for upcoming adjustments so others could work the clock after he passed away.
